When warm weather hits in May and June, I can’t wait to get outdoors. Whether it’s a beer on the Holy Hound patio or an afternoon kayaking on the Susquehanna, give me some sunscreen and send me on my way.
That’s why, last weekend when my 11-year-old brother graduated from elementary school, I was pretty jazzed to take a few days off and head home.
You see, my parents have a fabulous backyard.
That hammock, tucked neatly next to the woods, is just one gem. Add a pool for when temperatures soar, plus a shaded table for morning coffee, and voila — paradise. Did I mention there is a grill?!
I gush an awful lot about being outside, but there’s something about it that revives my soul. I get to the top of an overlook or, really, just drive past some trees and I can’t help but grin.
And, as a 20-something adjusting to a mostly sedentary workday, I find that chances to get outside make me a more active person in the summer months. I take fewer naps-that-could-be-mistaken-for-comas and watch less TV.
(I do eat more ice cream, but I hear that’s filled with calcium. And that the calories disappear as the ice cream melts. Or something.)
Do your habits change once warm weather arrives?
